DELIVERY VEHICLE IMPACT STUDY AGREEMENT WITH TEXAS A&M TRANSPORTATION INSTITUTE

Background

Changes in traditional shopping and delivery models have affected the regional transportation network in recent years. Companies offering quick and inexpensive delivery are responding to consumer demand and are increasingly filling online orders more quickly and inexpensively. This has resulted in significantly larger volumes of parcels being delivered directly to homes and businesses at a much higher volume than under traditional delivery models. Little quantitative information is known about the evolution of the delivery sector in Houston at this time, however the associated growth will continue so it is important to understand how our region will be affected.

Current Situation

H-GAC staff proposes to partner with the Texas A&M Transportation Institute to conduct a study investigating the potential impact on vehicle travel and emission of parcel delivery, and warehouse to retail deliveries utilizing medium and heavy-duty trucks. The resulting analysis will enhance our understanding of deliveries and their impacts within the region improving both transportation and air quality planning.
