TEENS IN THE DRIVER SEAT PROGRAM

Background

Since November 2009, H-GAC contracted with the Texas A&M Transportation Institute (TTI) to provide traffic safety outreach assistance through its Teens in the Driver Seat program. The program is a unique approach to safety outreach--working with teens in high schools to give them the information and tools to educate their fellow students about traffic safety. The success of the program, which is currently in over 500 schools throughout Texas, recognizes that teens tend to listen to their like-aged peers more than adults and other authority figures. In addition, the success of this program has been recognized by Congress, which included specific funding for peer-to-peer driver safety education for teenagers. The Teens in the Driver Seat program has helped twenty-five schools within twelve school districts and two colleges in the region.

Current Situation
The Teens in the Driver Seat program is an important part of the regional safety campaign. Due to the importance of addressing driver safety early and often with beginning drivers, it is critical to ensure that this information continues in junior high schools, high schools, and now junior colleges in the region.
