TXDOT FUNDING AGREEMENT - REGIONAL SAFETY CAMPAIGN

Background

In 2017, motor vehicle crashes cost the Houston-Galveston area approximately $6.4 billion in injuries, lost lives, and property damage. Not surprisingly, traffic safety is one of the top concerns expressed most frequently by our region's residents. Under the direction of the Transportation Policy Council, staff is finalizing a Regional Safety Plan to combat the region’s most prominent traffic safety issues. A major component of the plan is widespread public education on safer travel as a driver, pedestrian or cyclist.

Current Situation

The Regional Safety Campaign will develop and deliver public safety education, training and information on focus areas such as  distracted driving, driving while intoxicated, speeding, proper use of child  safety seats and seat belts, and safe traveling as (or driving in the vicinity of)  pedestrians or cyclists. Activities will range from the development of public outreach materials, information handouts, training sessions, videos and media targeting teens, bicyclists, pedestrians, and automobile drivers. The goal for the regional safety outreach campaign is to reduce the total number of crashes, fatalities, and serious injuries.
