LIGHT IMAGING DETECTION AND RANGING DATA

Background

In 2008, H-GAC acquired Light Imaging Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) remote sensing services covering approximately 3,695 square miles.

The data has been made available to the public, through H-GAC and the Texas Natural Resource Information System (TNRIS) geospatial data clearing house website.    H-GAC and member agencies rely on LiDAR data for various mapping activities and to support program efforts that include: Elevation Modeling, Flood Analysis, and Urban, Environmental, and Transportation Planning.

Current Situation

H-GAC and members of the Geographic Data Workgroup recommend participating in a joint project with the Texas Water Development Board and the US Geological Survey for acquisition of over 9,400 square miles of updated LiDAR data. The estimated cost per square mile is between $125-$175.

The cost-share project will be managed by TNRIS. A vendor will be selected from the Department of Information Resources pre-qualified vendors list.  The final deliverables will be available to all participants and the public via TNRIS’s geospatial data clearing house website.
