IMPLEMENTATION OF WATERSHED PROTECTION PLANS IN THE WEST LAKE HOUSTON BASIN

Background

Since 2015, H-GAC has contracted with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality to work with local stakeholders to develop voluntary watershed protection plans for the watersheds of the West Fork San Jacinto River, Lake Creek, Cypress Creek, and Spring Creek in the greater West Lake Houston basin. To continue these efforts, H-GAC submitted a  fiscal year 2022 Clean Water Act Section 319(h) competitive grant proposal to  the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality for a project to implement these plans. The project was selected for fiscal year 2023 funding by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.

Current Situation

The four-year grant award would fund implementation of the water quality improvement strategies outlined in these plans. Major work elements of the contract include:

  • Water quality assessments and field surveys
  • Stakeholder coordination and support
  • Education and outreach in project watershed communities
  • Installation of  structural measures including pet waste stations, on-site sewage facility remediation, stormwater drain marking, riparian reforestation and conservation.

This project will start in September 2022 and end on August 31, 2026.
