REGIONALLY COORDINATED TRANSPORTATION PLAN PLANNING ASSISTANCE GRANT

Background

H-GAC completed its 2022 Regionally Coordinated Transportation Plan update in February of this year. This plan identifies key gaps in the region’s transit network and recommends cost-effective strategies to close those gaps. One key barrier to transit use that the Plan update addresses is "transit information gaps" that result from travelers in the region not being aware of the transit resources available in their communities, or not being able to find the basic information they need to take advantage of those resources. The Plan's analyses demonstrated that these gaps lead to significant barriers to transit use in the region, and addressing them could be a cost-effective way of increasing the number of trips taken on transit.

Current Situation

H-GAC has been awarded $101,732 in Planning Assistance grants by the Texas Department of Transportation  to be split evenly across two fiscal years, fiscal years 2023 and 2024. The funding will help implement two Regionally Coordinated Transportation Plan recommendations related to transit information gaps.

  • In 2023, H-GAC will perform a traveler information study that will allow planners to better understand what information travelers need to use transit, and the most effective ways of getting that information to potential riders.
  • In 2024, H-GAC will build on the traveler information study by producing a best practices guide for the region’s transit providers, to help them ensure they are providing the information that travelers need to use their services, and disseminating that information as effectively as possible.

H-GAC expects to procure consultant services to assist with this work.
